First Day Jitters
The first day can be an anxious time for some children (and for Mom’s and Dad’s too!). They walk into a new room with new children, new grownups, and new “stuff”. Mom maybe looks a little teary-eyed that her “baby” is growing up so fast…well it is no wonder why then some children might suddenly cling to their parents and cry! Here are some tips for getting through the first few days.
Try to act confident yourself. If you seem anxious and unsure about leaving your child, your child will pick up on that and start wondering if there really is something to worry about!
Be consistent with good-byes. We will greet your child and you can give kisses and say good-bye. It is also helpful to make a plan with your child, for example; Mom/Dad will read one book to you then I have to leave. The key to a successful good-bye is following through. Make sure to say good-bye and then leave, sneaking out can cause the child to panic and that may make separation even more difficult in following days.
Arrival Time. It may be harder for a child if they arrive after all the children have settled into activities. You may find it easier to arrive at a time when they can enter the classroom with friends or before circle time begins.
Separation problems sometimes show up on the second or third day, just when you thought you were getting off easy. It is also common for children to have difficulties when there are major changes in the home. Let us know if there is anything happening at your house that you think is important for us to be aware of.
As a parent also I really do understand how hard this time can be. I know that you are entrusting me with a very precious gift, and I feel honored that I will be your child’s teacher.
If your child is having an especially hard time, we will give you a call on your cell or home phone, and you are always welcome to call the preschool room directly to check in on them. The preschool room’s phone number is 734-997-1243.
I am looking forward to a Great Year!
